Guard Dogs
A guard dog IS NOT a family or personal protection dog, it does not act the same, it does not think the same and it is not trained the same. A trained guard dog, has a different function or responsibility than a family or personal protection dog. The main responsibility of a guard dog is usually to guard a business, yard or territory, typically after hours, against any intruder or trespasser.

A guard dog possesses specific characteristics and temperament. They are highly territorial and tend to have a low pack drive. They have little or no desire to please and rather be alone even thou they often times work in pairs. They are used to patrol a specific area which they consider their territory or turf and they guard it with aggression. Some dogs used in defense or protection have a natural guard instinct which could be desired if left home and there is an intrusion so is ok to have some guard instinct just not over the top.

The main difference between a family or personal protection dog and a guard dog is that a protection dog sees everyone as a friend until the owner or handler says otherwise, a guard dog sees everyone who enters his space as an enemy, doesnt matter if its a child getting a ball or a 90 yr old lady looking for her cane, they will attack. A guard dog attacks on instinct and will apprehend or immobilize and intruder without the owner present. The protection dog attacks only on command.

As previously stated, dogs that have been trained to guard will attack anyone who trespasses, they usually lack social skills and usually do not bark or make a lot of noise or warning when a possible intruder approaches, and they simply wait and attack. They are not recommended for a family or personal home setting and should definitely be kept secured away from children at all times.

Sursa.

Guard Dogs
Fain materialul. :)

I like these parts:

True, a guard dog must attack every person who enter his territory. If not make this, he's not a guard dog.

A guard dog attacks on instinct and will apprehend or immobilize and intruder without the owner present.

This is most important for me.
If my dog - when I'll have one - don't make that, I will donate him. And I hope I can test my dog in this way...

That's exactly how I described Ben, but I did socialize him, plenty of it. But that's exactly how he managed to sink his canines into a worker from the very company Ben was guarding at night. The bloke came along early in the morning and opened the gate, entering the property thinking the dog knows him because he works there (pretty dumb actually). That cost him 10 days in hospital. The company paid the hospital bills but the mistake totally belonged to the bloke.

I like what the author of this post says here and I would like to know what's the element/elements defining the differences between the two types of dogs we read about above. I for one will say it's genetics and the way the dog is brought up in the first year of life; now, some will say it's all about training but to me that is like "twinkle twinkle little star".

...to stay on the line of socialization for a few more moments.
Many times a dog is "mean" or "hard" when in fact it is simply not or badly socialized. He grew up in a tight area and that's that. In fact, in our country many would isolate the young dog with that very purpose, that it may turn more aggressive towards people and I guess that works to some degree but you take that dog out on the street and see what happens. It will growl/show its canines etc and one would think "what a mean dog" when in fact it's simply not socialized.
The dog that is a hard guard dog (or a "real" dog, to be more relevant to the topic) has the genes for that, period. Dux's mother had a no-paper GS dog that would kill you as if it was trained by SWAT or something but never actually underwent one single session of training. The dog died a few months ago unfortunately.
