If a young dog is trained in prey "tug" work, will this make it less of a civil serious sharp "real" dog ? And if prey work is OK then how much should be done with a young dog, so its not sleeve orientated ?
This is Dux's reply
If we're talking about training for 'real' protection, not sport, this is the way we do things:
The young dog will ONLY
assist when an adult dog is being worked for protection, until the age of 12 months. Only after that, the dog will be trained for protection, when he takes things more seriously and the reaction is sharper. Now, during those months before reaching 1 year of age, you may play tug with the pup, but NOT associated with the agitator; the tug play is done by you, the dog's owner. The whole idea in this being to build that defense drive up in the dog, so when the actual protection work starts, he/she won't be interested in the agitator's 'toy' (sleeve) which the dog has had before when playing with the owner, but the interest is in the agitator himself.
That's simply the method we use for 'real' dogs.
To exemplify this, have a look at this clip of Axa; she was 4 months old in this video and this was the first time we did this with her. After that she only assisted when older dogs were being worked for protection. But subsequently she had to undergo IPO training and that took away some of the grip intensity, which in our opinion is what happens when the dog is being trained to out on command. No sleeve or rag in the picture.

then later at 10 mo old, same thing, just assistimg as an older dog is being worked. still I asked Dux to let her have the 'reward', as seen in the video - but we normally won't do that, the 'reward' for the trainee dog being that the agitator runs away.
