When it comes to civil work (real protection) I believe the most important thing is that the dog must have good genetics. only then we can talk about training. there is a different aproach to training when talking about 'real' dogs. at first you do use some 'sport' elements in training the dog but one needs to know when to walk away from that. focusing the dog on the agitator is very important, even if that comes at the cost of losing some of the 'grip' quality.

Dux you state that  'one must know ' when to move away from sport training the dog, and focus should be on the agitator..
Is this determined when the sleeve work looks to easy and/or when he starts not to release the sleeve ? Do you think that suit work should begin earlier as the dog can focus on  biting anywhere at the moment or mainly focus on a particular spot... Eg; Biceps or shoulder blades..
Another thing does less mean MORE when it comes to training, how many bites is enough in a single training session ?

In training for protection work, when should the dog be taught to 'out' from the bite.? Should it be trained to release from early stages of training ? And if so would then this slow his prey drive to be less, is what i'm trying to say..

I trust Santos or Dux would step in on this one but my guess is, you first need to make sure the dog makes a damn good bite BEFORE you teach the out on command. Then again, regardless of when exactly you teach the dog to out, there will be a slight change in the bite, the dog knows eventually he has to out on command so the bite won't be as consistent as before teaching the outing. That's just my opinion..

I do this in a particular way. Some may not agree with my way but I personally had good results. if I'm doing it for a customer, at first I only let the dog watch and assist other dogs in training a number of sessions, after that I let the dog bite the rag, I live the rag to the dog and agitate with another. I do that because i don't want the dog to be focused on the bite object but on the agitator, i do not let them bite until the age of 12 months, I only bring various agitators but no bite. The ones I train for sports I let them bite from an early start and I work their bite on leather rags, working it up to sleeve bites. In my opinion the out on command is as important as bite on command and does not impact the dog's hardness, if it's done without conflict and let the dog come out as the winner.

Thanks Dani and Santos for your honest opinion and methods of training, which i trust and respect..
I think i would like to work on the K9 to bite hidden sleeves/body suit , can this be achieved without any tug/sleeve bites by the agitatator..
Basically is it possible if the K9 is "only" aggitated from the ages of 12 - 18 months ?
And then after this if the K9 has plenty of prey drive, would it be best to have this drive focused on a running Man in a body suit and/or hidden sleeve, rather  begining with tugs and sleeves ?

Dogs that bite might be broadly categorized into two groups: dogs that think they can; and dogs that think they must. Dogs in the first group think they can at the dog's discretion. Dogs in the second group have, in the dog's perception, been put into the position that it feels it has no other choice. There is a big difference in the approach to dealing with each group, and a lot of variation within the approaches to the individual dogs.

The dog's that think they can range from dogs that are genetically predisposed, to those that have been environmentally encouraged through a lack of training or bad training. In both cases human failure has led the dog down a path that leads to misery for the dog and danger to humans. Dogs identified with genetic disposition to bite should never be bred. They are unsuitable for companion work, and it may be difficult if not impossible to gain reliable obedience response for duties requiring bite work.

The dog that bites because it think it must may be well trained and socialized, but perceives itself to be in a situation where it knows no other option to prevent what it perceives as an undesirable incident.

Bite prevention for both categories involves two approaches: training and management. Reliable obedience must be gained, and behavior and perception modification used to enhance control of the obedience. Management is important because it must be used to prevent situations where obedience reliability has not yet been gained by training. In a perfect canine world management must be thought of as an interim measure and an addition to training - not as a substitute.

Training aggressive dogs and preventing aggressive behavior from developing is both a training and a management issue. Bite prevention approached with training and integrated management has the best potential for success.

Success may be viewed as the lowest predictable level which is acceptable.None of my own dogs has ever bitten because I put them through extensive training to ensure their reliability. Yet I can not train for every situation, and I use management to prevent those situations from arising if possible.
