Cato
« on: January 20, 2011, 08:13:25 PM »
This is not my dog, he belongs to the police force here and is handled by Lt. Wesley Mack.   But Cato is a dog I am thinking seriously about breeding to Brogan for her first litter in a couple of months.  He is a very hard dog, very hard bite.   I know some about his sire, a sport dog with some real dogs behind him, and not much at all about his dam....although I think Gymor is a fairly large Czech kennel (or was?) if I am reading and interpreting information right.   The Lt. did not know anything about this dog's ancestors, he just knows he is a good police dog.  He found the pedigree and got it to me and I found that he is out of Gerro Leryka x Cinna z Oseckebo klastera.   I found all kinds of information on the sire and only one small picture of the dam and nothing else.
The dog is very, very environmentally sound in all situations, high prey drive, high defense drive.   He has and will bite for real in a hurry.   I have wanted a Drago x Brogan litter for a long time, but I am thinking I will do this and keep a female to evaluate.   I've seen him work with pressure and talked to the decoy, he seems to be a real deal GSD.  I will post more pics but I'm having trouble either with the forum or my computer.

Thank you for making time to introduce this dog to us, he looks really good and according to your description he is indeed a good dog. He has quite a bit of DDR behind..

Multumim ca ti-ai facut timp sa ne prezinti acest caine, arata f bine iar conform spuselor tale, e intr-adevar un caine bun. Are ceva DDR in spate..

Thanks guys, I hope he and Brogan will produce a nice female for me.   My friend in the Czech Republic knows the dogs, especially the sire and the breeding station that the dam comes from and assures me that they are some of the best and oldest Czech lines.   I will try to get some video of him soon.

Thanks Roger he looks great.  I must say you have an excellent way of descriping dogs and background to them.  It makes one feel in the moment and as if the experience is first hand. notworthy

Oh, thanks Zak I appreciate it.  I bred my first working litter of dogs when I was 12 in 1972, but my second one and many afterwards from the early 90s.  I never stopped thinking about them in between those years and I think about them now all the time, day and night.  I am obsessed.

Zak is right, you do know the art of words and you do describe dogs in ways that help the reader appreciate a dog most likely to its true personality.
Well if you breed Brogan to Cato, sounds like you will have a 'fun' summer (..?) with some fine GS pups - good on you!

I haven't decided on it for sure about Cato, I know he is a real dog and certainly breed worthy, however, I am going to have a fun summer with pups no matter about Cato.   If I breed Drago to Brogan instead as planned I am almost sure it could not go wrong, as sure as any breeder can be on a first time breeding (never 100%).  The only thing I worry about is screening who gets the pups.   When I get a pup from another breeder (very seldom) I know what they need to be kept informed about the pup's progress and they assuredly could not ask for a better working home, which is the only thing that helps their breeding program.   In many years of breeding I find that I only get that rarely for a pup no matter what a buyer says, or someone I place a pup with says.....it's still rare and it is a treasure that I've learned to appreciate, especially in the last 16 years.   I search for these type owners diligently and try to screen people I don't know and impress the need for them to keep me informed, especially in a first time breeding.   But without these type people with your pups, a breeder is flailing in the dark, at least in the semi-dark, because keeping one or two pups out of your own breeding and never having good information about the other siblings doesn't teach you anything about consistency....one of the most important things, if not the most important thing in breeding.   So I hope to find people like myself and other people like minded in the German Shepherd world who appreciate the same qualities in dogs, it will be vital so that I'm not only enjoying my pup I produce, but knowing that the other life I was responsible for bringing in the world is well cared for and also helping my program.

let me say this, before I translate your post..
I trust your judgement when it comes to breeding, sometimes you just follow your heart, it comes down to a gut feeling. As far as breeding goes, you could breed Brogan to both these males, in the space of 2 or 3 years.
As far as future homes for the pups... that's a part of the picture no one could vouch for, if I may put it like that..  Unless you're happy with keeping all the pups or give them only to close friends or relatives. It's part of the breeding picture, isn't it.. You may have a face to face chat with a future owner of one of your pups and the person could be milk n honey but as soon as they get far from you they could turn into the opposite..

You've been on the breeding field for some time now, just follow your heart on this one  ;)

This policeman wants a pup out of his dog and Brogan badly and it won't hurt me to pass forward nice things people have done for me lately.  Good things come from actions like that, some that can't even be foretold.   I will do it and test my own female out of it well...then in a year I can take Drago to her if all is well.

Thanks Dani...yea, I remembered that Bara had a sister to Gerro and she has told me that he has many real dogs behind him, and that the dam of Cato comes from the old breeding station Gymor.

I will see, may be that he throws better pups than Drago, we will find out! lol    Some day I want a female out of Greif, maybe in a year or so.

CATO MEETS BROGAN
---------------------------------
Lt. Mack brought Cato over this morning and we introduced him to Brogan.  She's not quite ready, but should be sometime within the next few days.

Pictures do not do this boy justice, he is just stunning in person.  Big and strong, calm but alert and ready to go.   This is going to be a very, very good breeding I think.
