I wanted to relay an interesting story regarding a police dog in our training group. This dog was said to be a "real" dog, and seeing him work, I have no doubt he would bite; however, we had a very good example of why sport training is bad for even "real" dogs.
Back when the new group just started with Bob, my trainer...
the K9 officer and this dog were on a chase last winter at night time for a burglary suspect, the bad guy runs onto some wooded property and they are in hot pursuit. Bad guy runs into a pond and is out of sight to the handler, although he can hear him wading through at least knee to waist-deep water. Officer sends his dog toward the sound of the bad guy, hears a lot of commotion and suddenly his dog appears, with a coat in his mouth. Bad guy gets away.
My trainer told the handler it was because of his training on equipment..his toy drive equal or more intense than his fight drive. The handler said he truly believed that the dog "thought" he had the bad guy in his mouth, it was dark, wet, etc., etc.
So, instead of wondering, Bob took the whole team down there and and they reenacted the entire situation. And every dog they took did exactly the same thing.
These are dogs that policemen are depending on for their very lives at times. Lots of work to do, but they will not make that same mistake now.
Slipping sleeves, carrying sleeves....why, except for sport, teach sport techniques? There is a better way.
Infractorul a fugit.
