Drago & Brogan from Texas
« on: June 29, 2010, 02:50:22 PM »
Hi, I'm Roger from Texas...been interested in GSDs and personal protection dogs for many years, although I also hunt and catch wild hogs with dogs.  I have one 3 year old male and one 18 month old female.  I've been through 6 other GSDs (with great peds, I was told..)that were not nearly enough dog, but so far these two have been good.

I love my GSDs, very excited about seeing dogs like Grief and Bodo and some of these others.   I will lose sleep tonight over that picture, also! lol   Over several of these pictures, as a matter of fact.   And there is a dog on John's site that I would clone. lol   A couple of them.
My interest in GSDs would mainly be the DDRs, but I am mainly wanting great dogs...I want something with very balanced drives but a dog that won't back down.  I expect it from my other dogs, and I want nothing less in a GSD.

Nici eu n-am putut dormi dupa ce-am vazut cainele ala    Adica vreo 2.

Hi Roger, this area is about you and your dogs and requires an appropriate name, so please rename your topic or tell me and i'll do it.

Hi Roger
first things first - welcome to the forum!
That's a very nice "intro" and can i say I love that thicker black dog in the picture! You got ome nice looking dogs over there!
yes Bodo was quite a "nasty" looking dog, wasn't it.... That's how I would want my GSD to look like!! John has got that blood so you may want to keep an eye on him ;)
Well I hope you will enjoy your stay here with us, as you may have noticed I try and translate quite a bit of what's going on here so I trust that will help.

I looked at the ped's, some interesting blood you got there... could you describe in a few words what they are like in terms of temperament..?
And by the way.. the male looks so thick! do you let him eat the hog??!  8-)

Now, that's a powerful head right there!

Drago has been civil since he was 5 months old, when he surprised me by growling at someone at the park who wanted to approach him.    He is very protective to say the least, he only got more so.  He also has an overly active prey or play drive in my opinion.   He has no off switch unless he's in his crate.   He comes out of his crate like a racehorse coming out, but he also enters his crate the same way! LOL
I made some training mistakes with him when he was a pup, but now I have a very good trainer (a police dog trainer) who has turned into a great friend over the last several months, and even though our focus is not on GSDs, he is going to help me make him the dog I want him to be.  He does not believe in sport training, and he mostly fixes police dogs that were actually trained with sport techniques.   So anyway, Drago will bite, that's for sure.  The work is having him settle when there are people around, he considers everyone but family to be at least a potential enemy.
Honestly, the jury is still out to me on whether or not his prey drive is so immense that it might mask some nerve issues...I don't trust maniacal toy drive in a dog....but so far so good.  I have not worked him very much at all, my focus has been on my other dogs.
But I will work him in some storage units day after tomorrow with the police dogs and see how he does.

My female is a very nice girl that I got from Von Stark in Mexico City.  She will bite for real, also, has very good instincts for the work, but I am going very slowly with her.  She is a little more laid back, but has some prey drive as well.   She is also protective, but I can tell her someone is ok and she will allow them to pet her, unlike Drago.

Sounds like you got yourself some fine watch dogs. Do you like the black GSDs or is it just coincindence that both your dogs are black? The female sounds to be like my Desa, she is very protective and it takes her a little while to accept new friends. She is ok, good social attitude, but turns protective if / when I'm in the picture.

1ha  that indeed sounds like quite some drive! But given the hog activities, that's actually good..

Thanks Dan!  I appreciate it!  I will see if I can get someone to take and upload a short clip, my computer won't stay on long enough at a time for me to do it.  I need a new computer soon!

Zimbris:
It was a coincidence to have two blacks, I had Drago first and the female was the best female of her litter, I didn't care what color she was.  But my next one will not be black! lol

"given the hog activities, that's actually good"

The GSDs are not my catch dogs! lol  They would not last a minute with a big, rank hog if they tried to catch one and hold it.  I have American Bulldogs for that, and I (along with my ex-partner and now my trainer has joined us)  also have the foundation almost set for all around family protection dogs that will hunt and do anything else hopefully...they are Dutch Shepherd/Bandogs;  we call them Dutch Riker dogs, whose foundation I have been working on for 15 years.  They are a mix of performance American Bulldog, Knpv line Dutch Shepherd, and performance Neapolitan Mastiff (the ABs and Neos in it are nothing like the show dog versions).   But I still went crazy about GSDs, when I found out there were still  good ones out there.

I have never tracked with the GSDs, never done man tracking although my trainer trains it and drug dogs.  I don't have a use for it, myself, not yet anyway.

With the cur dogs we hunt with (blackmouth cur, Catahoula, etc.)...they are "hot" nose dogs for the most part.  They can wind a hog from the back of a truck sometimes...they will follow only a fairly recent track and they don't go far.   These are the bay dogs, they will trail the hog and "bay" it up so it can't run far, circling it and barking...then the catch dog is brought in to catch the hog by the ear or jaw, and then we come in and throw it to the ground and tie it up for removal.   The more hound (plott hound or other) that people use, the colder the nose and they will go out for miles on a track, but I don't like those.
I don't have any cur dogs anymore, due to health reasons I have just about stopped hunting altogether.

Well, in the last couple of years I've had 4 back surgeries, developed lung disease, chronic staph infections, had skin cancer surgery on my face, and now I have a hernia that I can't seem to get anyone to operate on (yet) because of the other stuff..lol....but you know what?   I just cut grass and tomorrow morning I will be working dogs! lol
