Ye there all pretty good examples of that DDR type, and i also put Held v Ritterberg on the top of the list when it comes to overall structure type..
Held in a sense gave me the fascination of old DDR dogs, and Casso has been the type i have visualised for the last decade or so..
He truly has that Held look about him... ;)

I think I would be extremely happy with a dog that looked like Held or Bodo and with the temperament of either Bernd or Pele Kiebitzmoor..

Dani, If i would have a dog like this. Surely, will put him at the pedastal! :D

BTW, just wandering why these great dogs and their owners wasn't able to keep frozen semen during the time there are still alive? Unless during their times frozen semen is not possible yet.

Think i have read on another Forum that in the early 80's, it was possible yet dogs such as Don and Lord were not stored for future use.. I wonder if
Held v Ritterberg semen were available what would be the price figure :o

At times i think that many DDR dogs have that look of Held... Only that most photo's we see dont catch the right expression. such as a full flared muzzle look.. I think that the photograph of Held and Ingo v Rudingen are very nicely taken.. These days we can fabricate the whole look of the dog, with trick photography...

I came across a few more rare shots

Don

Young strong and BIG is The 'Don' in this photo, super specimen and producer...!

This one of Don is totally much better, then the other photo with the guy in the picture..

There actually was semen frozen on  Don vom Rolandsteich By Mark Reed he is the person who owned Don.
Mark disappeared in the late 90's i believe. I believe sometime between 2005 and 2006 i received a phone call
from Mark. He was looking for a pup and not just any pup you should all know he wanted something with  Don
vom Rolandsteich. So who better to call. I do not think any person today that has as much or as many lines to Don.I  talked with Mark for a long time and asked about the rumors of frozen semen from Don and sure enough he did freeze semen. Now the sad part no one kept the fees up so i guess like any semen not paid for it is deposed of.Now for the people who have no real experience in the frozen semen let me tell you a few things one is it does not always survive the freezing and thawing. And it not always give a litter. And then if you do not have the correct lines to breed to results may not be what you wish or dream for. In talking with Mark i can tell you what he told me about Don and this applies to any dog we may call great. Breeding with big named dogs can be many and often it is done just for stud fees so many pups are ordinary some good and a lot of crap does come when dogs are breed this way. So Don produce some ordinary and some crap dogs. Today there is frozen semen on some old ddr dogs but i can tell you the owners of the semen have used it and results were not great or even good nothing like the sires the semen came from. Why they did not know what to use the semen on or have the blood to do so. That is why we do not hear of the success of bring back any old dogs. For people thinking who is Mark Reed He is the person in the photo with Don and was one of the first people to bring the ddr dogs in.. A great Don son Jim was here also and he was bred mostly to show line dogs
Mark bought a male pup from Hena C kennel and sold it a year or so later. I had no pups at the time. But had he waited 4-5 months later Big Sammy D was Born. He could have him Sammy D has Don sons in his pedigree
Sammy D 4 1/2 months old 56 lbs

In poza, Sammy are 4 luni jumate si 26 kg.

John... would you say those who got their hands on those good dogs simply did not know how to make the best in terms of breeding, once they brought the dogs in..? Did they simply lack the experience..? I mean, why have things gone so wrong during the last years..

Well there was no concern to save or preserve any of these dogs at the time. Many went to police or home business protection so many of these were not bred many were used to try and improve head and bone type,to improve or darken pigment and civil drive. Very few people bred to keep the ddr lines. On one of the Ed Frawley videos he talks of this while filming the ddr trail.I think just as today sport is very big many these dogs were not in favor of the sport groups.
Dani i think you have this video you listen to Frawley talk you will hear the comment he makes about the use of the dogs and how they will be gone

Yes I know what you mean, Ed Frawley makes a very interesting comment on his video on the '89 DDR Siegershow which he posted on his website, he said he's afraid that type of dog would eventually disappear.. looks like he was right (or nearly..)

This photo truly shows the size of Sammy, and he turned out to be a beast of a dog..

I agree. Many great dogs proved their greatness when they are already 6 feet under. And people appreciate them more when they were long gone.
