Title: Drago & Brogan from Texas
Post by: RogerW on June 29, 2010, 02:50:22 PM
Hi, I'm Roger from Texas...been interested in GSDs and personal protection dogs for many years, although I also hunt and catch wild hogs with dogs. I have one 3 year old male and one 18 month old female. I've been through 6 other GSDs (with great peds, I was told..)that were not nearly enough dog, but so far these two have been good.

I love my GSDs, very excited about seeing dogs like Grief and Bodo and some of these others. I will lose sleep tonight over that picture, also! lol Over several of these pictures, as a matter of fact. And there is a dog on John's site that I would clone. lol A couple of them.
My interest in GSDs would mainly be the DDRs, but I am mainly wanting great dogs...I want something with very balanced drives but a dog that won't back down. I expect it from my other dogs, and I want nothing less in a GSD.

Nici eu n-am putut dormi dupa ce-am vazut cainele ala  Adica vreo 2.

Hi Roger
first things first - welcome to the forum!
That's a very nice "intro" and can i say I love that thicker black dog in the picture! You got ome nice looking dogs over there!
yes Bodo was quite a "nasty" looking dog, wasn't it.... That's how I would want my GSD to look like!! John has got that blood so you may want to keep an eye on him ;)
Well I hope you will enjoy your stay here with us, as you may have noticed I try and translate quite a bit of what's going on here so I trust that will help.

I looked at the ped's, some interesting blood you got there... could you describe in a few words what they are like in terms of temperament..?
And by the way.. the male looks so thick! do you let him eat the hog??! 8-)

Now, that's a powerful head right there!

Drago has been civil since he was 5 months old, when he surprised me by growling at someone at the park who wanted to approach him. He is very protective to say the least, he only got more so. He also has an overly active prey or play drive in my opinion. He has no off switch unless he's in his crate. He comes out of his crate like a racehorse coming out, but he also enters his crate the same way! LOL
I made some training mistakes with him when he was a pup, but now I have a very good trainer (a police dog trainer) who has turned into a great friend over the last several months, and even though our focus is not on GSDs, he is going to help me make him the dog I want him to be. He does not believe in sport training, and he mostly fixes police dogs that were actually trained with sport techniques. So anyway, Drago will bite, that's for sure. The work is having him settle when there are people around, he considers everyone but family to be at least a potential enemy.
Honestly, the jury is still out to me on whether or not his prey drive is so immense that it might mask some nerve issues...I don't trust maniacal toy drive in a dog....but so far so good. I have not worked him very much at all, my focus has been on my other dogs.
But I will work him in some storage units day after tomorrow with the police dogs and see how he does.

My female is a very nice girl that I got from Von Stark in Mexico City. She will bite for real, also, has very good instincts for the work, but I am going very slowly with her. She is a little more laid back, but has some prey drive as well. She is also protective, but I can tell her someone is ok and she will allow them to pet her, unlike Drago.

Sounds like you got yourself some fine watch dogs. Do you like the black GSDs or is it just coincindence that both your dogs are black? The female sounds to be like my Desa, she is very protective and it takes her a little while to accept new friends. She is ok, good social attitude, but turns protective if / when I'm in the picture.

1ha that indeed sounds like quite some drive! But given the hog activities, that's actually good..

Thanks Dan! I appreciate it! I will see if I can get someone to take and upload a short clip, my computer won't stay on long enough at a time for me to do it. I need a new computer soon!

Zimbris:
It was a coincidence to have two blacks, I had Drago first and the female was the best female of her litter, I didn't care what color she was. But my next one will not be black! lol

"given the hog activities, that's actually good"

The GSDs are not my catch dogs! lol They would not last a minute with a big, rank hog if they tried to catch one and hold it. I have American Bulldogs for that, and I (along with my ex-partner and now my trainer has joined us) also have the foundation almost set for all around family protection dogs that will hunt and do anything else hopefully...they are Dutch Shepherd/Bandogs; we call them Dutch Riker dogs, whose foundation I have been working on for 15 years. They are a mix of performance American Bulldog, Knpv line Dutch Shepherd, and performance Neapolitan Mastiff (the ABs and Neos in it are nothing like the show dog versions). But I still went crazy about GSDs, when I found out there were still good ones out there.

Hello Roger,
Good to have you on and seems that you have plenty of experience in the K9 scene..
Look forward to some pics and possibly some real nice footage of Drago :)
Those hunting lines you have been working on sound tough and rugged..

I have never tracked with the GSDs, never done man tracking although my trainer trains it and drug dogs. I don't have a use for it, myself, not yet anyway.

With the cur dogs we hunt with (blackmouth cur, Catahoula, etc.)...they are "hot" nose dogs for the most part. They can wind a hog from the back of a truck sometimes...they will follow only a fairly recent track and they don't go far. These are the bay dogs, they will trail the hog and "bay" it up so it can't run far, circling it and barking...then the catch dog is brought in to catch the hog by the ear or jaw, and then we come in and throw it to the ground and tie it up for removal. The more hound (plott hound or other) that people use, the colder the nose and they will go out for miles on a track, but I don't like those.
I don't have any cur dogs anymore, due to health reasons I have just about stopped hunting altogether.

Well, in the last couple of years I've had 4 back surgeries, developed lung disease, chronic staph infections, had skin cancer surgery on my face, and now I have a hernia that I can't seem to get anyone to operate on (yet) because of the other stuff..lol....but you know what? I just cut grass and tomorrow morning I will be working dogs! lol

that's behind my house, my backyard. We don't really have a training field unless we train with the PSA guys. Now we are training in some woods behind a baseball field/park, where they can do a lot of tracking, but we train in my woods, also. We also train at my favorite place, which is some storage units. Inside is all concrete and medal...very loud and distracting..smooth floors. Kind of disconcerting to the dogs the first time they go in there.

pozele sunt facute in curtea din spatele casei mele. Acum ne antrenam in niste paduri in spatele unor terenuri de baseball, unde se poate efectua si urma, dar ne antrenam si in padurile mele. Mai efectuam antrenamente si in locul meu favorit, niste unitati de depozitare (depozite). In interior totul e metal si beton... foarte zgomotos si (distragerea atentiei).. pardoseala neteda. Destul de dezorientant (asta e cuvant? ) pt caini cand intra acolo pt prima oara.

Wow... that sounds pretty awesome.. woods etc..
Also the storage units training aspect.. obviously you people make the best of it and train the dogs under some serious pressure. I like it that you consider these things when it comes to training.

It's hot here too, but big parts of the country have been flooded, unfortunatelly we've had some heavy, heavy raining..

Drago looks good on that suit! Maybe it's better you guys do this stuff very early in the morning..?

Thanks Dani! He bites hard.
LOL, we don't normally work in the heat of the day, it just worked out that he was bringing one of my dogs back that he's been training so that I could keep him while he takes a trip the next three days.....and I asked him to let Drago have a quick bite while he was here.

Bob was hiding in the woods in my back yard but he had put his wallet on the ground before putting on the suit, and I think Drago caught his scent before he saw him.

Hidden sleeve next time.

Merci Dani! Are priza dura.

Title: Brogan
Post by: RogerW on January 04, 2011, 04:39:50 PM
My little DDR pup has grown up some and turned 2 in late November, just checked her hips and they looked great, sending them in to OFA. We are very, very pleased with this female we got from Carlos Baca of Mexico City. She will not let anyone approach, very, very good nerve, and will gladly bite for real. No interest in equipment. She just dotes on all of us, but is especially protective of my son, maybe because she sits in the back seat with him everywhere we go, and I think the close proximity will always strengthen guarding instincts. Anyway, she's our Brogan, everything I could ask for in a female so far. If she is typical of E. German dogs, this is what I like best so far out of all the GSDs I've had.

In fine, ea e Borgan a noastra, tot ce as putea cere de la o femela, pana in prezent.

hey Roger thanks for sharing these pictures and info, Brogan looks really nice! Will be looking forward to seeing her again around here.. she only helps making this little online community look better ;) Abia astept sa vad poze noi cu ea, in viitor.

Thanks guys!! (I didn't catch what Santos said, maybe Dani can translate?)

I hope to get some video or working pics of Drago and Brogan soon, my trainer has gone to Afghanistan to work a bomb dog for a private company, and won't be back for a break until several months have gone by. In the meantime I have a police officer we trained with in the group who is supposed to come out and I hope he does soon.

Multumesc!!

Title: Re: Drago
Post by: RogerW on January 09, 2011, 07:51:54 AM
Well, Drago is a unique dog. I had a pit bull female one time very much like him and my wife and I say all the time that she has been reincarnated in a big, black GSD body! lol Extreme drives. Extreme prey drive, extreme defensive drives, extreme civil drive, extremely dominant. He has no off switch. I don't know if he sleeps or does push ups in his crate at night. lol

I had it in my mind that I needed a more balanced dog, one that was more of a family protection dog instead of an all out ...soldier. However, I re-read the old GSD axiom of "the extreme must be bred to produce the sufficient), and if I were to move him I think I will have missed an opportunity to breed something that might be rare in GSDs... in my area, anyway. My female is SUPER protective, also, but a better family dog for HER family (in the sense that she can lay down on the floor and chill out). But she likes no one else. The combination should produce some very hard dogs like their parents, and maybe something quite special.

At training I talked with an officer that has a proven police dog with many live bites and arrests...a very hard imported Czech male, who was asking me if I was interested in using him to Brogan when she comes in. I am going to watch him work but I have heard from my trainer and several others who say this dog is the real deal police dog...I think I might use him to Brogan, keep a female or two and use Drago to all of those. And some day hope to get another male from a certain friend in Romania.

Roger spune despre Drago:

Roger, thank you for taking time to post all the above.
I really love "reading" your expectations as far as what a GS dog ought to be like! You are the type of individual I love to interact with, I feel blessed to have you, John, Reg and all the other guys around here...
Well you describe the dogs pretty well and I would say you got yourself a fine "team" over there, i wouldn't rush into looking in other places for new dogs, if I were you.
It would be cool if you could get some images of that Czech dog, videos yet better, just to see him in action 8-)
Well then, we hope to get good and above good news from you and the 2 blacks you have!

Faci o descriere faina a cainilor tai si as spune ca ai o "echipa" tare acolo, nu m-as grabi sa ma uit dupa caini noi in alte locuri, daca as fi in locul tau.

Thanks Dani, I am very, very happy to know some real deal German Shepherd people, also...you are a vanishing breed!
See, I am only expecting them to protect under any circumstances like the dogs I have been breeding for so long. I wouldn't keep a GSD or an American Bulldog or Bandog, Neo or Dutch Riker pup that won't do its job. I have gone through 7 GSDs, all of them had great working pedigrees. I have two that I believe are worth breeding. The thing I love about German Shepherds that make them dear to me are their intelligence and their beauty and movement and instincts. And something else I haven't put my finger on. But they have to work at least as good if not better than my other dogs. So I want the best if they are going to side track me so much from what I've been doing the last 16 years. lol, which was breeding my own line of dogs. And some day when all I can do is sit on the porch and holler at people to get off my lawn, I will probably let someone younger have the big dogs and I will have myself a couple of great German Shepherds. They are just so intelligent, and something about them really speak to me. I have said it many times, I don't know why I got thunderstruck by great German Shepherds when I had other dogs I have so much time and effort into, but I did...so now I want the best I can get.

Here are some of my other dogs, just in case anyone is interested. These are the ones that live with me, I am part owner of other ones related to these that are at my best friend and ex-kennel partner's house.

Neapolitan Mastiff...Mog, I imported his sire and dam and I have just placed him with a friend. You will not see many, if any, working Neos that work as well as this dog and his sire. I will get a female around April that is double bred on this dog's sire. And my AB stud will go to her for a continuation of my bandogs.

AMERICAN BULLDOG female pup named Boo, one year old last month, last female of my line of Steel-trap American Bulldogs
Boo is a very, very tightly bred AB, so tight she has to go to a complete outcross....she will go to Mog, Riker, etc.

Roger spune:

well once again, i really like knowing your expectations on dogs in general - you breed for what they do - not just for looks! These are WORKING dogs so they should be promoted primarily under working principles! God has been good to me and my first dog was indeed a true man stopper and maybe that was for a reason, since he protected my younger sisters several times AND stood right by my side in certain circumstances. It's just that, these days i getting harder and harder to come across GSD's like that.. so with that in mind, if what you have right there is good, use what you have!

That was Mog's very first agitation. lol He is the real deal and his sire and dam were, too. I had it in mind to try to preserve these dogs..the good ones of the breed, but there are so few good ones that it seemed impossible. Show breeders have bred them into really crap dogs.
However, in Feb. there will be a breeding done by a friend of mine that I got started in these dogs and the pups will be double bred on my original male I got from South Africa, and he was the reason Mog was so good...his name was Dante and he was the best dog...man. I can get a male and female of those and get back into them. They're fun dogs for sure. lol
here was Dante...he protected my wife and would not let a man come in the door
at 4 months old!!!!

Truly, Dani, even though these Neos are about unstoppable animals, I have moved every one of them that I owned and you see what I am interested in now. Having a performance Neo is like driving an 18 wheeler to the store for milk, it's just unnecessary. And, they slobber when they drink water, the show types slobber constantly.

I like Neos because they are good for making my Bandogs. I do like them, but I LOVE German Shepherds. 1cg

My ex-partner and his family have 16 dogs at their 95 acre farm home. I have 7 dogs right now, three of which are going to Bob's (my trainer) home and kennel when he gets back in a year. I used to (back in the early 90s) have 16 dogs here, but I was relocating wild hogs and raising catch dogs (American bulldogs).

There will be a good male with your name on him. I also want you to have a Drago pup as soon as I can get him bred next year. I have a feeling about that dog, and those Stormfront Brawnson genes, too.

Was SB a prey driven dog rather than a hard dog with fight drive ?

This is one I know of, and I also know of T.J. Enckhausen (sp?)...who was my male's grandsire. I think SB produced a lot of police dogs like TJ that you don't hear a lot about, but he's known in police dog circles as one of the hardest dogs that anyone had ever seen.

Asta e unul din cei de care stiu eu si il mai stiu si pe T.J. Enckhausen bunicul cainelui meu.

That cracks me up how they named that video clip "protection"....they are taking a natural protection dog and loading it up for a toy, training it to not do what it does naturally...or at least to limit it.

I don't get it, but then I'm not a sport guy.

Looking at those males, I think I need a larger, unrelated female, although I like everything about Brogan other than her size. If Jim (as a large dog) bred to Iwa produced these smaller dogs, males included, I have a feeling that Cato x Brogan might not produce any dogs Cato's size, either. Of course I could be totally wrong. The police like a smaller, faster, dog. But I want a bigger female because I like a larger dog, and want to produce that. I need a big Czech or DDR female.

well... that is what they call "protection work" more often than not, in so called "modern / standard training". I watched today a number of videos online, featuring good dogs being trained for equipment.. breaks my heart.. I did comment on the video above, in the DDR section.
As far as cato and Brogan.. like you said, you never know.....

Roger it would be good if you find a female who is big and built, but more importantly i feel that her Sire should be big and strong type..
The maternal Grandsire of pups helps to add size from what i have noticed on the pedigree data base..
Not very common to have a taller leg dog to be thick and built, but rather slightly shorter(25 inch) and straight longer thick back..

If that works out to be the case, then Cato and Brogan should throw some size, because Brogan's sire, Jim, is a pretty big dog, and Cato is a large dog. Of course the best structural thing about them is both have excellent hips...and even better than the structural concerns are they both act like I want a dog to act. I'll be happy to get it done, I found out yesterday she's been keeping herself so clean that I didn't realize she was still bleeding a little bit, so she's just coming in good. I was about to think she was going out, and in actuality I think she's just coming in.
GSDs are different than bulldogs, at least this one is. She's making me crazy. tazi

Thanks Thara! Yea, Dani, I'm hoping that's the case. I will know within the hour. It would cost $500 to AI her. I don't think I can do that, though if I think she's still in heat and he's just not getting the job done, at some point I will take her to Drago. That is the litter I"ve been thinking about for two years, so it's not going to kill me.

She goes to the vet in the morning. Options are:

1. She is either not quite in proper heat or she is out of it.
2. She has structural problems

Decision will be made tomorrow (depending on the results of the answers to these options...I will decide whether or not to AI her or give her more time with Cato, or perhaps put her with Drago. I will know more tomorrow.

Yea, well, it's live animals, things dont always go the way we want them to. What are ya gonna do? lol

You know, while I was waiting at the vet in a room alone with her, I was struck by her beauty and nobility and the thought that I really need to get out with her and enjoy her every day, she is such a fine dog herself!!! Instead of being too emotionally tied up in what she can produce, I'm going to spend the next 6 months getting out and enjoying her for herself....man, she's a GREAT dog. She hasn't been away from my home but twice now, and she just owns the ground she walks on. I love her. She weighed exactly 70lbs, just what I told Lt. Mack I thought she weighed yesterday. Dynamite comes in small packages and she's a black beauty.

Thanks Thara!!! :)

My line of ABs are hybrids, the oldest hybrid lines down from the original hybrid breeding (Rippin Woody x Slashin Sheena)....line bred down from White Fang mostly. We tweaked them with two American Pit Bull Terriers in the early 90s and then right back into the ABs since then. I had 4 ABA Catch Dog champions and all of my other dogs were titled catch dogs. I was big into catching trophy wild boar, and our bulldogs excelled at that and real protection, also.

Santos, my line of ABs were champion catch dogs and many of them were very good bite dogs. I was a Catch Dog judge for the American Bulldog Association (ABA) and used to title bulldogs from all around the Country on bad hogs.

here are a few pics of some of our bulldogs...a good bulldog ought to protect you and your family and yard, AND be able to catch a big wild hog or cattle.
I just grabbed some pics that were handy, I have more on my old computer...much older ones.

Thanks guys, I wanted to get more on topic for Drago and BROGAN (before Thara kicked my ass! lol) so I thought I would put these pics in that I took through our window the other day, with my 9 year old son in the back yard with Brogan. He didn't know we were watching him. He is imitating me and he really loves Brogan, and she him. I am going to back off and let him and her work things out. I had a dog that was mine to "train" when I was just a little older than him, and he knows more than I did at that time. He isn't doing things "correctly", but my wife pointed out that they will have a better bond if I just stay out of it and let them work things out together. She sleeps in his room, he can "train" her how he wants.

Drago looks great and strong masculine type, and also just noticed that he has a white rim of hair across the withers, have not seen this before..
Its as if he has came across some fresh wet paint..

Thanks guys!! Drago is super extreme, one of the two most extreme "on" dogs I've ever owned. The other one was 44lb gamebred pit bull. Someone just misplaced the "off" switch, quality control issue. lol
He will be bred to Brogan some day.
