http://www.schutzhundcenter.com/schutzhunde-zucht/ostblut/ddr-blutlinie/

this is how Google translates it (looks a bit funny since it's done by Google):

Dog sports in the former East Germany began in the GST. It was only later evolved the dog sport division, briefly SDG (section service and working dogs).
Breeding conditions and training conditions differ in the GDR than it is now in the situation. Only HD-free shepherd dogs were allowed to breed. Enforced by the offspring was this assessment that existed only in the GDR, not in the FRG. This means that all German Shepherd puppies had to be aged from 12 months to a test subject to review body, health and temperament of the dogs.
when a young shepherd dog were genetic defect is detected, this was not approved for breeding.
evaded the owner of a Puppies this test, so were not for this dog breed suitability papers issued. This means also that Shepherd could not be used for breeding, he remained all his life without papers.
Unfortunately we only have two portrait photos with typical Schutzunden DDR bloodlines:

Also, the guard dog training was something else in the GDR. There was still the Beisskorbflucht or the bike run. That was not always easy for the carer. He had to drop from the wheel, without harming yourself or the dog. Here are two photos of a bike run. The apparent culprit is our Jens, was still lean and mean ...

I like this look, somewhat straighter back, rascal look on the face, gets me thinking "old school"
