They don't have that "explosion" in expressing their guarding attitude, but they definitely have that suspicion towards strangers, which many, many modern GS dogs lack, even from some well appreciated czech bloodlines, I might add..
Yes John really likes Fran, she has that "no strangers allowed" look both in her eyes and body language
