Title: Puppy test
Post by: Man Stopper on January 18, 2010, 09:28:04 AM
In puppy testing what signs would one look for if they were looking for a civil PPD type dog ?? From what i have read it is the the puppy that bight on ankles and hands constantly and cannot be touched easily.. Do you guys have have any knowledge from past experiences, something i have always been interested in, and wish i could have the chance to test dozens of litters to come to some form conclusion/result.. I chose my dog because he came first when called from the other 2 males.. Although when i brought him home he kept on bighting hands and ankles for the next few months, he was really

I can't say what's the what in this given situation.. if the ankle and hand biting is a good sign for a PPD type of dog, then I should be extremely happy about a few of the puppies in Axa's recent litter, one of them most definitely being Happy De Zimbris. My first GSD, Ben, was not like that whatsoever but turned out to be an outstanding PPD dog, ever since the age of 10 weeks he naturally became very suspicious of those around me. He did not show much drive (sport type) much at all in the beginning. There was some kind of a switch in his mind somewhere, I guess, because he was a rather quiet dog who turned into a beast when the 'button was pressed'.

I personally look for signs of self-confidence and control. I did that with Ben and it worked. The day I went to pick him up from the police unit just outside Constanta, I tested Ben like this: as he was willing to get from point 'a' to point 'b', I placed my foot in such ways as if to stop him from going to the desired point; he could either stop and play with my shoe, or maybe just stop and wait for my foot to get out of his way, or even go back to point 'a' (which is not necesarily a sign of fear, but rather suspicion towards me). But instead, Ben tried his best to either walk over my foot, around it.. as he tried that, I kept moving my foot in ways to stop him from making any progress. Regardless of what I was doing, he kept trying and trying, eventually even (almost) barking. All these things communicated to me two things - that he was determined and self-confident.
Romana:
Asta pt mine a insemnat 2 lucruri - determinare si incredere.

Was thinking what if a very young pup, say 4 - 5 days old was exposed to loud noises from fire crackers to loud machinery until the age of 7 weeks... Would this be similar to the bio sensor stimulation, in strengthening nerves etc.... Or will it psycollogically scar the dog for life...????????
The reason i mention this is that most dogs i feel show some kind of weakness when it comes to thunder and gun fire for example and was just wondering if this can be overcome with some early introduction of LOUD NOISES...

ManStopper spune:

Well I think a dog with good genetics will not have a problem with loud noises later on in life. Also, a specific response to, say for example, thunder or gun fire, does not necessarily reflect a state of fear. When Ben was 8 weeks old, he did not respond in any way at all to loud noises, nada whatsoever. But when he grew older, he turned more aggressive towards such noises, especially when he was indoors and he could not see the "source" of the noise. I tend to believe that was, if anything, his protective nature. Animals respond to sounds in a serious way. Also, animals use sound to intimidate other animals.

With the noise testing of these puppys it looks like that they had failed, as they seem scared and stayed in the corner.. Although they showed a single pup that barked at the end of the clip.. Is there any different test we can do to puppys, for sound, courage and or see which is most confident.. Does anyone test puppy's on there back to see if they want to bite back, which apparently means that it has potential for security. And also if you pick them up they bite which is another sign for a good protection dog... How would the major breeders, choose a young pup for someone looking for a serious protction dog, does anyone have any experience on what a young pup should show....????

This is how I would do things and Happy will prove me right or wrong, with time.
I would personally look for clear signs of dominance, self condifence and active response when being challenged in any way at all. I want to add that I would not necesarily look for drive, a good protection dog doesn't have to be very drivey in my view. That's if you want a sport dog or if you favor lively animals (and you have the time fur such). I think the clip shows the seriousness with which puppies were selected for work / future breeding. Also... seeking shelter when under pressure, in my non-professional opinion, doesn's always indicate fear, but sometime suspicion.
Ro
Asta cred eu.

Thats an interesting way of looking at it, that seeking shelter may indicate suspicion.. Can you brieflly explain on what kind of challenges would one test a young pup, besides brooms, pots and pan noises which seem to be common i have found..Its a bit of a tricky one to pin point and maybe it just might be the luck of the draw, for us non professional guys Excluding John who has much more experience and possibly can have a better reading of a young pup and its potential i would say..

Yes John would definitely have seen many litters of pups so he would quickly be on the spot. As far as testing the pups, I can only mention what I do I guess. I would generally go for 2 major elements, putting some kind of obstacle before the pup and see how it deals with it, what's the level of resistance and determination. I also push gently the pup as if to say 'go away' and again, notice the response. If the response is a good one (the puppy tends to "fight back" by pulling back towards me) I gradually increase (in the follwoing days) the intensity of my push. Now, of course, that's just a (silly) way I am testing pups, I guess one can come up with different creative elements of pressure to test the puppy but I believe the basis for testing a pup is the 'pack' thinking (how it relates to you and the other pups in the litter). But you know, a good dog is easy to spot, I think you can't miss the overall confidence level (along with the body language signals).

Was looking at some puppy testing videos, and was wondering is it important to test for gun shy or fire cracker testing...! I mean how can we benifit from a dog for todays society and general purpose in this day and age. We just need a dog for company and protection if i am wrong...It would be different for the army or government...

I personally believe we do need the gun or cracker testing, whether it's to do with dogs for the society purposes or personal protection or army etc.. In either case, you want dogs with healthy, stable nerves especially if these dogs will also have progenies!

Your right Dani we must not breed sound sensitive dogs, as it is a trait which many dogs have.. I like the video clips and there different methods in training young pups for noise tollerance.. Will apply this type of training for my next dog in the future.. Wish i was in Europe or the States to get a better chance of getting a DDR/CZECH bloodline ..

Well here in Australia we have a mixture of west and Czech dogs, and some kind of DDR lines, but nothing of 100% DDR combo.. So will carry on with Onyx line combined with some addition of working lines from local and international lines.. And then mate Onyx with daughter ( 1-2), via artificial insamination if all goes to plan.. But am happy with Onyx and his overall character, although would like to see atouch bigger version of him, between 25 - 26 inches.. You can assist us with some Nero semen if the fee is not to much...

Well i have a female who's on PDB - Zonkrulahous Iris, she is a nice stable female with plenty drive, good confirmation and size, with a nice pedigree. As for Oscar he has not been used also,so cant say he's a good producer, although both Oscar and Onyx are heavily line bred over and over on well known dogs here.. These 2 dogs (Stobar Hardt and Security Pekiah)in particular have been kept by Von Forell as stored semen for nearly 2 decades, and in a sense gave Von Forell a reputation for producing security dogs, before he introduced overseas lines.. Eg; Gento v Haus Larwin, Kuran v Teikerhook And Asa v haus Gebbets to name a few.. These international dogs gave more prey drive and sport type behaviour, but not the balls and grunt of Stobar Hardt and Security Pekiah who are closely line bred on Ex Reidstern. So have faith that Oscar fingers crossed, Onyx can throw some naturally aggressive dogs, well 1 or 2 atleast in a litter..

No progenies of Onyx at all, tried once in 2008 but he didnt know what to do/not interested in a sense.. Then a year later tried to get collection and this was a nightmare for the vet and nurse,he became really wild when some stranger tried to jerk him off There was a female on heat exactly on the 11th day,but he didnt care.. Its been only until recently that i feel that i must do something about restoring his bloodline but not with any female... Yes like i said dogs like Stobar Hardt and Security Pekiah were well known in Ausralia for producing some naturally sharp dogs, and there is stored semen at Von Forell waiting to be used apparently to the right bitch.. Regalhaus Kennels has Security Lex semen for $10,000 and Lex is a Security Pekiah Son, you can view a Lex son on You Tube (Regalhaus Jet).. Similar type dogs at Regalhaus Kennels only bigger than Onyx, but still not as sharp as Onyx IMO..
